Congratulations on the new moto gig! Super envious of the new ride! I keep telling my agency that if they would just authorize lights and sirens on my bike instead of duty car, I could respond a lot quicker! Lol

wow, big career adventure, Dave

I enjoyed a day with the ACSO trainers with my son a year back

https://www.bayarearidersforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=539731&highlight=happy+birthday

which is barely the tip of the iceberg compared to the full on pro training, I am sure

they are a great bunch of guys there at ACSO

That's an awesome birthday present! :thumbup

Congrats man!!!!! I love being a motor and I love my BMW so much more then the Harleys I started on. Matt, Steve and the guys at ACSO put on an excellent motor officer class and i went back last year for motor instructor which was even more fun. Be safe and have fun. Hopefully will see ya at a competition next year if things get back to normal.

Thanks. Yes, great training team tgrrdr have over there!

Congratulations! And, hey, if you ever get tired of your newfangled RTP, I've got a lovely, pre-broken-in-just-for-you 2012 RT in "metallic beige" and would be happy to trade. ;)

I can vouch for the Alameda county sheriff MC training. I paid $150 for 1 day beginner training + $50 for their Kawi. Been a couple years now, so I forgot most of it since I don't practice it. Tried it an my R1200GSA during lunch break but found it easier than the Kawi. Also watched the police cruisers doing their drifting training during lunch break, pretty impressive.

Not really on-topic, but it’s also not worth starting a new one... but anyway, today in Santa Cruz I spotted some motor officers in training in the parking lot between 3rd St. and the river. I went over to observe (being a former MSF/TCTI instructor, how could I not?). They ignored me, but I still didn’t think it would be OK to take photos. The instructor in charge was a guy on a BMW RT. Quite possibly the same Ventura PD motor who performed some amazing gymkhana tricks for us instructors a few years back.

Anyway, if anyone’s inclined to check it out, now you know where to go.

I don't mean to sound too much like a fanboy, but the Harleys never made sense to me as police bikes

I’ve always assumed that the use of Harleys is dictated by government agency “buy American” policies. Same reason all cruisers are American.

I've heard rumored MANY TIMES that Harley-Davidson is leasing the Electra-Glide PD models to the CHP for $1 a year and are including all maintenance. While I can't substantiate the claim, I can easily see why they'd do it. Free advertising with the largest police motorcycle fleet in the country.

I doubt that is true. Although I do think they include all maintenance in their leases. But if that were true, I doubt CHP would be transitioning to BMWs, which they are currently in the process of doing.

It's no surprise that they would. I'm 100% fine with HD's being used in a city enforcement role. But for highway use, they literally make zero sense. The speed wobble issue was never truly resolved by Harley no matter what they threw at the problem and the CHP knew it. When I worked in the city, we used to routinely visit with the CHP motors there as their office was just around the corner. The officers hated the Harley and didn't want to give up their RT-Ps that they had at that time. In fact, one of the officers told us he was resigning his motor officer position to go back to a patrol vehicle as he absolutely did not feel safe on the HD whatsoever and refused to ride one altogether.

Geez, that's scary.

I'm glad we went with BMW for city use. After training on both, BMW is better in maneuverability, whipping U turns and such.

Congrtulations!!!

Just for you, we're getting rifle mounts attached to the bikes. And our training also included some range time, which involved riding up in gravel, shooting from the bike, and then dismounting and shooting some more. This was done head on and from the left and right sides. That portion was pretty damn fun! :mm4l:ride:troy

Nick doesn't need no sticking rifle mount he's got the dog man!!!

I can't say one way our the other from a personal perspective in terms of police use, but I have ridden an Electra Glide and I have owned a 2011 RT and I'd also agree that the RT was a far more agile machine. Lightweight? Absolutely not. However when compared directly to an Electra Glide, it's like night and day. I can't image how exhausting it is to muscle around one of those suckers for a 10-hour shift.

Departments have been using Kawasaki KZ1000s since the 70s.

Good point. SFPD currently uses (if I’m not mistaken) a few KLRs too.

But in any case, it’s my understanding that the big Kawis were built in Nebraska.
