KTM 690 SMC restoration

Hi Everyone

the supermoto forum seems to be kinda dead on here so i decide to create my mini build thread

so basicly after about an year on the DRZ400SM i started looking to purchase another bike to take its place. Thanks to Barf i was able to find a 2008 KTM 690 SMC.

The bike had low miles on the motor & tons of expensive aftermarket parts (EVO 2 addon, Hub + wheel) The Bike sat outside under a cover for a good amount of time due to previous owner's injury at work.

I love my cars and motorcycle very clean so imo there were a lot of SMALL things that bugs the crap out of me lol.

Cosmetic Wise:
*Rusted bolts through the bike
*Water Spots and mewdew throughout the bike
*Faded rubber and oxidation in different places
*Swirl and scratches on the fairing
*Grease Dirt Throughout the Bike
*rear plate is bent
*grips were melted
*Akra Exhaust cf guard is faded
*brake lever clear coat is peeling

Mechanical Wise:
Front Brake has air pocket need to be rebleed
All the fluids are pretty dark and need to be drained and replaced
rear turn signal is in the way of the exhaust
some low speed partial throttle hesitation (map issue)
suspension needs to be setup
bike is a little too high for me , i plan to lower it by 1" with kobalink

Plans & Goal:
I work a lot so the amount of time i can spent on the bike is very limited, so please bear with me as the updates will be slow.
I plan to restore and overhaul the bikes exterior condition to my standard, dial in the suspension to my liking and change a few things to my liking as well.

*update 1*
Removing that ugly USDM tailight and turn signal
Im not sure why the US version of the SMC light was so bulky and ugly.. the UK version is much cleaner

im not sure when the left signal broke snapped in half like that but it was fine when i picked up the bike lol. Anways...its in the way of the exhaust so we need to eliminate the entire fender!!

i decided to go with pw_garfiled led brake with intergrated turn signal!
this piece was awesome ! everything was plug and play and fitted very well!

I started by Removing the tail cover and man all those dirt and build up really bugs me!! so i started cleaning the factory plastic by washing off the dirt and grease build up. I used a tooth brush some soap water and microfiber towel to clean the hard to reach crevices. after that i coated the plastic with 303 aerospace uv protectant.

since the gas cap is out , i figured it give it a nice cleaning as well, used Q Tip on this one between the hinges.

the seat was out as well so i might as well clean it

40737677961_32387be716_c.jpg

i used a non slippery protectant on this one. Im hoping to upgrade to a better seat in the future.

putting the new aftermarket fender with tail is just like reassembly took 5 min!
I didn't put the plate back on because the original license plate it bent all kinda messed up lol. so i requested a new one from DMV.

man this mod sure cleaned up the rear end so well!! thats one sexy ass butt!

Final Thought:
This mod was great! the light was very bright and the build in license plate light is very bright as well! cleaned up the rear end of the bike so well!
there were a lot of dirt build up between the fuse boxes and wires which i like to clean up, but my friend has my steamer so that will have to wait next time when i clean the air filter.

BTW I bought every bolt for the bike to replace due to oxidation and rust lol still waiting on them to come in as well.

Wanted to thank Dave for this diamond in the rough! I told you i am OCD about things haha i promise you within a year this Bike will be restored back to its former glory!

Can't wait for more updates, keep it up!!

How do you like it compared with the DRZ400SM?

bike doesnt feel as agile as the drz, you can feel the weight even after all the carbon piece and lighter exhaust. the tire doesnt help either. the bike right now isn't setup the way my drz was setup so i cant really give it a fair apple to apple review.

i need to find a windows laptop to flash the correct map to get rid of the low end choppy throttle.

but as of this moment i still feel like my drz400sm is still a better canyon carver all around bike.

the looks depart the bike kills the drz400sm in everyway , its pure sex lol imo

Update 2
Front wheel clean up and brake bleed
So today after i put my kid to sleep , i got about 2 hours of free time, so why not bleed the front brake. The front brake was very mushy and lots of play and the fluid was very dark from the window.

38947375200_42eda1161c_c.jpg

Yuck..the cover is hopeless , i'm trying to find a aftermarket one to replace this one but so far no luck... the mirror leg is covered in rust that i couldn't remove, so most likely i will remove the mirror all together and get some crg clamp on.

40715006312_c382870c31_c.jpg

Only two screws on the top cover, This is my favorite Japanese screw driver. Its very precise and never ever strip any screws!!

40715006382_80bef42875_c.jpg

and here is the fluid , pretty dark and dirty from sitting. I replace it with motul using my mightyvac.. took 5 min and we were done.

39862936045_44160857fb_c.jpg

being ocd about cleaning things, the front brake caliper needed some attention,
i started cleaning the caliper with brake cleaner but the brake dust and weather oxidation were kind of hard to clean. so this was the best i can do.

anyone have any idea how to remove the oxidation mark from the caliper? i tried mothers mag polish with no luck. should i wet sand it with sand paper?

40715006302_9318e71c20_c.jpg

oohhh i see some dirt under the fender, gave it a quick wipe , i could not get into some of the small holes, god i need my steamer back grrr..

25887067457_faee5651af_c.jpg

grrr dirt and build up on the wheel and hub ... must clean!!@...:laughing

26887110888_90d8362e9a_b.jpg

god..these hub and the holes were pain in the butt to clean, i ended up cleaning each hole with cotton swap and wiped each spoke down

40047855324_2a9d09cc0e_b.jpg

so here is the tire cleaned , wheel/spokes cleaned hub cleaned. lol i think i spent 5 minute on the brake and 1.5 hour cleaning the front wheel! :laughing

Beautiful. A man like myself who is OCD about cleanliness!

I'm currently rebuilding another SMC as well.

As for brake cover, you can go OEM or the orange anodized ones.

Those will work. The SMCs uses a coffin style brake master, same as the current 690 dukes.

The clutch is just your off the shelf magura - will work too.

I will head to your house in an hour! thanks again man!!!

Good work man. I’m pretty much the same way as far as making sure my bikes are very clean and perfectly maintained, so I can relate...

Looks good! If it was me I'd hafta take the caliper apart to check the pistons/seals though. :thumbup

the akra cabon pieces were faded yellow oxidized , so i cut buff and polish wax it.

i've replaced 70% of the bolts now, some i couldnt get to without pulling the engine.

waiting on chain and sprocket , clutch brake cover and mirror block off plates. still havent installed the kouba link yet

thinking about ordering a new handle bar and a new seat and after that i should be set.
