There are new laws in the state of California permitting all owners of single family residences to add an accessory unit. Two actually, one attached and one contained within the existing property. There are pre approved plans and many other tools to make it easy for you to help the housing crisis in your city while improving your financial situation. Call or message for more info.

I had a member of Facebook group I'm a part of comment that her mother had looked into putting a unit on her property a couple years ago and the permits were about $60,000. Today permets are $1,100 to about $8,000 depending on the size of what you choose to build.

Has anyone here had experience, before or after the new laws, building an accessory unit (granny unit) on a property?

Thank you!

Just heard about the granny unit build stuff.

Good call by whomever thought of it.
800SF, set backs waived and permit over the counter in some places. They made it sound like you did not need plans though.. which I doubt.

A positive for sure!

1200 square foot Max. 4 foot set backs, and Placer county at least is promising over the counter pre-approved plans.

so you'll be able to go in write a check for your permits pick up the plans and have contractors bid it out. Lots of potential here.

What does that include? I doubt that amount would even cover the water. The $60k sounds right from my experience helping my pops doing remodels/additions for customers. I seriously doubt that the cities would cut costs so drastically.

Thank you for confirming these changes are impactful.

I've cut and pasted page 9 of the powerpoint Placer County presented last week at the local board of realtors. I think this is going to be huge.

I called the county and asked that question. You are correct, the water, sewer, well, sceptic charges remain. If you build the unit attached to your existing SFR you are not required to obtain seperate utility permits.

Thank you for helping my ADU (Accessory Dwelling Unit) education with your question. Love me some BARF!

So an add-on are exempt from permits, but if you build a second building, anticipate typical $50k + in permits. Sounds right from my limited experience.
