helmetless passengers?

Regarding kids - I'd love to take my grandkids on a ride in the sidecar, but I don't want to spend a ton of money on helmets that are light enough for their little necks, especially when they would probably outgrow them between rides. I've told them that when they're older, and their necks can take the weight of our adult helmets then they can go for a ride.

Someone should set up a rental program that supplies helmets in kid sizes! Of course the liability insurance would be beyond astronomical!

Sometimes life is fun when you take a little chance. I squirt around the front of my house without a helmet when I’m tuning and listening for things.

Also an LEO. We risk our lives daily as it is...

So, your logic is, "it's ok to ride around a small child without a helmet on a motorcycle because it's more fun, and I'm a cop so I take risks daily" ? :dunno

no, that's simply regarding myself

i don't choose to live in a bubble wrapped world. for kids that applies somewhat there too.

The child thing was because you quoted LB, who specifically mentioned loved ones/children. You're still kinda sending a mixed message there, too, FWIW.

Taking unnecessary risks != living in a bubble wrapped world. Do you often go 10-8 without wearing your vest? Do you wear your seatbelt while on duty?

I think the point is that no one in this thread is unaware of the risks involved in their behavior. It is a calculated risk and we are willing to accept it.

Same as riding through the AFM pits on the way to tech without a helmet on.

Can bad things happen? Yes.

Have they happened in the past? Yes. There is a thread somewhere on BARF about a racer several years ago hitting a patch of black ice in the pits, crashing, and suffering fatal injuries.

Does that type of crash happen often? No.

It’s a calculated risk. I’d wager I’m more likely to trip and fall carrying my toddler down the stairs in my house, than crash my pit scooter at 5 mph in my court.

My kids were going around the block with me before they could even touch the pegs. I put them in front of me with their hands on the tank. Never more than 5-10 mph.
A calculated risk? Sure....but with coaching that continues to this day.
The real risks came later when they wanted (and got) their own bikes.
No regrets there either. I honestly believe I helped them become good and safe riders.
.....but my work is not done.

So....do you actually love and cherish your wife or is that just something you say?

I have to ask that because anyone who really loves and cherishes someone wouldn't even consider riding them without a helmet. All kinds of things could happen.

JMHO

In that case better not let them ride at all, the increased risk of not wearing a helmet is incremental compared to the risk of riding the bike vs driving.

:thumbup

My son is 20 months and already knows to hold the grips on the scooter when we are putting around. He leans into the turns and is starting to understand how the throttle works.

If he would wear a helmet I’d put one on him, but he won’t even wear a baseball hat. No way he’d tolerate wearing a helmet at this age.

:laughing

man everytime I get home my daughter (now 21 months) will come and wave 'Hi'...and then run over to the motorcycle and say "This!!! Up!!!" and her half ass way of mumbling out 'motorcycle!'.

So then I take her around the block while my boy jumps on his bike.

Helmet for the boy on bike, nothing for my daughter and I. about a good 20% of my neighborhood are cops. Always keeping speeds low and safe, small quiet neighborhood with one way in and out.

Calculated risk....we all know it and evaluate it.
