gen1 SV650 FatBar conversion - riser/clamp help

Doing the ol' MX bar conversion. I'm probably gonna go with some ProTaper Contour 1 1/8" bars because reasons.

I'd rather not do 7/8" to 1 1/8" adapters because the SV's stock risers are already a bit on the tall side. I'd rather not add any rise to the clamps or pullback (since the SV's risers are also swept back). Also, I feel like those adapters make a bike look sorta "unfinished." Not a big deal, but whatever.

Problem: Most FatBar risers use a 12mm bolt to attach to the triple. I guess most dirtbikes use them. The SV has 10mm bolts. I'm not gonna drill out the triple. What clamps have others used for this? I know lots of people have done it.

Renthal & ProTaper clamps both use ridiculous proprietary bolts. I don't think ProTaper has 10mm options. Or, at least I had a hard time telling on their website. Renthal has one 10mm bolt option, but it only comes in one length, part of which is unthreaded. So, if the unthreaded part is longer than the part of the bolt that goes in the clamp, plus the depth of the triple, you can't use the clamps. Boo-hoo.

Anyway, would love to know if anyone's done this & figured it out. Would prefer a clamp that's available on RevZilla as I have a gift card burning a hole in my pocket. I'm also not interested in Rizoma risers (because spending over $100 when name brand ones cost $50 is just dumb, or an LSL triple (I don't need to convert the triple, it already has risers).

I think you are looking for something off an early 2000's KTM dirt bike (like the 2001 LC4) they use an M10
But they are a 1 piece for lower clamp.... So

the D shape is to keep it from spinning while you're tightening the bolt without needing to put a wrench on it. handy sid effect is you can snug up the risers with the bars in place.

there is a decent chance that a regular 10mm hex bolt will not fit down the hole for that custom headed 12mm, so a little patience with a grinder or a file (file might be better, goes slower thus carfuller) would replicate the anti-spin feature while fitting to the pro-taper D hole

When I put fat bars on my SV650S, I used TopYokes UK for a nice top clamp kit. It seams you're trying to do this on a super tight budget, so this might not be the solution you're after... but compared to spending hours beating my head against a wall this was the best solution for me. The fit and finish is outstanding and price was very reasonable (about 1/2 the cost of an LSL/Spiegler kit). I opted for the extended brake lines from Top Yokes, and ordered longer cables from Motion Pro. Everything fit perfect and went together in about an hour. Less time dicking around trying to make stuff work, more time riding.

looks like it'son the way back up, a little, but with BREXIT the british pound is pretty low this is a decent time to buy!

Risers cost $50. I'm not gonna get a top yoke kit. I don't think that really counts as "tight budget" so much as "I just don't wanna spend unnecessary money."

I have everything I need except the risers, not really interested in the "get a kit" comments. I just hate how difficult it can be to get such a simple question answered. Even RevZilla's customer support wasn't super helpful: "Sorry these don't come in 10mm." Yeah, I knew that already.

Can you post a pic?

I don't see why you don't just drill the triple. It's only 2mm larger and you're done.

Or.. use a 10mm bolt, put a washer underneath the head, and grind a flat on one side so it fits in the hole.

I honestly just don't want to drill the triple out, I'd rather leave it stock. Though you're right, expanding the holes by 2mm probably isn't that big a deal all told. I'm guessing I could even do it with the triple still on the bike, just get the right drill bit & eyeball it.

I have bars on my bike, it's rideable. I don't have to figure this out right away. Because I know it's a popular and oft done modification, I'm waiting on an answer from someone who's done it before.

Random comment, check out the Tusk handlebars from Rocky mountain. They are just as good and much cheaper than Pro Taper.

I have $200 to spend at RevZilla on a gift card. So, I'm trying to source as much as I can from them as possible. ProTaper bars, clamps if they fit, and some new mirrors should eat up that gift card.

Here you go... 1-1/8" bar size, 10mm (or 12mm) mounting bolt, adjustable height, various color options, low cost...but not available from Revzilla. Sorry.

I was hoping to stay away from no name Chinesium parts, but it seems like it'll be a lot easier to go that way. With the bars + mirrors, I can definitely spend that $200 gift card. Thanks for the link. I think I found the same risers on eBay. So, at least I can order them without giving Bezos more money.
