Dirtbike help - green stickers etc

Darwin's exception
After a 20 yr hiatus from dirtbikes, I am looking at picking up an older CR125 or 250 again (when the right deal comes my way) But I've got a couple of questions regarding green stickers.

Basically, whats the deal with the stickers and two strokes. If I buy a late 80's early 90's two stroke and it doesnt have one, can I still get one for it? Are there limitations as to which parks I could take it? Are there any modification limititations - spark arrestors etc?

Obviously its been a long time, and if any one can be of any help - I would greatly appreciate it!

I last rode a MX'er on Cali State Park land early in 2001, and at the time this is what I knew. Things may have changed by then, so don't take this as what is still happening.

As I know it, as long as the two-stroke bike is '97 or earlier and has a spark arrestor, it is legal to ride and "Green stickerable". If the bike is newer than '97...well you are playing at your own risk. However, the last bike I had was a 2000 CR250, and I was able to get a green sticker for it directly from the DOT.

At the time most of the parks rangers didn't really care what bike you had. I actually had one comment on my nice new CR. He knew it was a 2000 and I'm sure he knew it wasn't "legal", but it had a green sticker and a spark arrestor, so he didn't have a problem with it.

Like I said, times do change, and this was almost 2 years ago.

And I don't really think the 4 strokes are any different. You still have to have a green sticker and a spark arrestor. Of course, I don't really know, as I've never had a 4 stroke dirt bike.

I'd take a trip to a local park some sunday and ask the people actually riding. I think they would be the best source of info.

Hope this helps!

Competition bikes manufactured before Jan 1 1997 get green stickers. After that date they are supposed to get red stickers. I know many people who have purchased 98 & newer bikes & got green stickers. I know a few that have gotten nasty letters from the DMV & were required to change to red stickers.

The difference in the stickers is that with a green sticker you are legal all year round, with a red sticker some riding areas have restrictions on what time of the year you may ride.
Here is the red sticker seasons blatantly plagerized from Offroadrider.com

CJ, you have to have a sticker (either red or green) on your bike to enter an OHV park. If the bike has been manufactuered BEFORE January 1st 1997, it automatically gets a green sticker. For the bike manufactured AFTER January 1st 1997: If there is a 3 or C in the eighth position of the VIN of your bike, it means that it does not meet the emission standards, thus it gets a red sticker. If the 8th digit is anything else than 3 or C, then it is a green sticker.

For more info, read:

Spark arrestors are mandatory in most OHV parks, but that doesn't have anything to do with the Green sticker...

Thanks guys! I appreciate the info and resources, thats exactly what I was looking for.

Looks like I will be ok as my budget is for a bike built long before 97.

Thanks again!

The first time you go out and ride, make sure you get your bike sound tested. You can get a big fine if you are caught on the trails with a bike that is measured above the 96db sound limit.

Good call - I wouldnt have done that. I'm basically looking for an older CR I can rebuild (both engine and suspension) for under $1k. I'd be looking at keeping or returning the engine to factory stock running condition for reliability.

Have folks had issues meeting the decibil limit with the stock arrestor/silencer?

I think it is mostly the 4-strokes YZF and CRF that have problems. A 2-stroker with stock exhaust should be fine...

I had to put a FMF Quiet pipe on my YZ400F to barely meet the limitation! Before, I was at 103db!!!

I doesn't hurt to stop at the sound test station the first time you go riding just to make sure you are ok (and to get the sticker ;)).
