Dirt noob with his 18 year old son going to Metcalf for 1st time - what to know?

Riding All The Time
There’s not much to know, really:
The trails there are all one-way.
They are marked with difficulty (if it’s not marked, look at your trail map or ask the ranger)

Some people might try to tell you the beginner trails there aren’t easy enough for beginners. Don’t listen to them. You won’t die on the beginner trails at Metcalf. I encourage you to go ride your bikes at Metcalf.

Be prepared to fall down.
Read all the signs, including the ones before entering the enclosed tracks.
It’s very dry, hot, and the ground feels like it’s covered in marbles this time of year.
Use outriggers as necessary (not the preferred way)
Bring water.
Smile
Laugh
Take pictures and share
Do it all over again until you are fully addicted

Thanks Doug. We did Knoxville a couple weeks ago and had a good time. The drive up there was pretty brutal though - that last 20 miles or so...

What's an outrigger? :)

I love Metcalf. The trails there are pretty accurately marked in terms of difficulty. I like to warm up on trail 1, hit the GP track, then back out to the parking lot. It's not very difficult, but will give you a good mix of hills and turns to get warmed up for the rest of the park. Trail 2/2B to the TT track is another good one. When you get to a trail crossing, just pay attention to the signs, to make sure you're going the right way, since all the trails are uni-directional.

If you are not that experience in the dirt I would stick to green trails or blue trails. The black diamonds are usually singletrack with some rocky sections sometimes. There's a lot of elevation changes at Metcalf. Like trail one will imediately go up and then down. There are some long downhill sections also. Also there are 3 main trails in the park 1, 2, and 3. The distance of each trail goes up with the number. You can also link the trails in some places. In my opinion 2 is the easiest/flattest sorta.

When you go in drive up or in your case ride up to the office. Have you ticket ready, like on your phone. The signal is spotty up there but they have wifi so you can just whip out the email on your phone. They will have you also sign a bunch of waiver stuff on your phone and they will issue you a liability waiver card so you don't have to keep signing the waiver everytime you come in. Then they'll tell you where you can park, they have green X's marked in the parking lot where you can park. But I guess you can park just about anywhere if you are riding in.

Then ride. If it's your first time there ask for a trail map. There is a trail map near the restrooms also. It is possible to ride all the trails at metcalf in one day also. Also they have a new motocross track if that's your thing and it's MUCh different than it used to be lots of elevation changes. It was dry and marbley when I rode it. Also want to point out a lot of the trails are whooped out, like in a lot the black diamond singetracks you will go around a corner and there will a series of little whoops, if you let off the throttle it'll suck.

They also have air. So if you are going to air down before hitting the dirt you can air back up when you hit the pavement. I think it's across from the restroom there is even a tire changing station there also.

There's no more GP Track :( it's combined with the new mx track.

Air!
Some folks do air. Me, not if I can help it.

Metcalf has about ten miles of technical singletrack, plus the mx track, that keeps me amused. I’m hip to share...

The MX track is awesome in the right moisture conditions. Otherwise it is pretty slippery right now.

There is a crew of trials dudes there. They way rock.
