Conti Attack SM vs Diablo Rosso 3

At the risk of starting a tire war...

Hopefully the discussion can stay focused on these two tires, as I'm not looking for "recommendations", nor am I interested in what tire you have on your bike unless it's one of these two. I know there are a lot of good tires out there...

The Rosso 3 is relatively new so I'm not seeing a lot of comparisons out there for supermoto use. Wondering if anyone has run both of these tires on a lightweight SM (450's 500exc etc) and has direct personal feedback.

Target environment is 50/50 street/track.

Here you go Alex!! Excerpt from http://www.bayarearidersforum.com/forums/newreply.php?do=newreply&p=9778031

I'm personally biased toward the C*nti Attack, but that's because I had a near crash experience with Rosso IIs in the rain. Zero experience with the IIIs...

Depends on your use, I suppose. Since I'm always down to hear the opinions of those in the industry, I reached out to Revzilla about this. Geared the questions towards my bikes but maybe i'll be applicable for some of you guys. His thoughts mirrored my experience. I got 1800 miles out of the Conti SMs that came with the bike. I'm at about 3500 with the Rosso 3's and am ALMOST at the wear bar.

Honestly, for the smaller tires, IMO, anything MotoTireGuy listed would be just fine. On the bigger sizes, if you're a street/track rider, I guess it comes down to individual preference since they're all relatively great these days.

Thanks for contacting RevZilla! How may I help you?

yO! Conti Attack SM vs Rosso 3 for a 701 and WR250... what's your take?

John K.
Rosso 3 will be the more practical one, I'd probably go with that. More mileage, still super grippy, I like that tire a lot. Conti is great but those tires would be destroyed pretty quickly with any kind of normal street riding.

cg_ops
What about on the track? How's their performance compare?
A-/B+ pace

John K.
Depends on the track. If it's a normal one the Rosso III would probably do the high speeds better. Supermoto tracks are fast, but short (and involve dirt).

cg_ops
Regular (Sonoma, Laguna, Thunderhill)

John K.
I'd still stick with Rosso IIIs then. I mean, they'll both perform really well but if you're riding a normal sport track, the sport tires will like that better than the sumos.

cg_ops
Makes sense - what are the advantages of the Contis? If I were considering both tires for a sumo/kart track

John K.
A faster warm up probably, but it's mainly non-quantifiable things - the fact that it's made for supermotos, they'll be a bit softer because of the weight difference, they're made to be stable at extreme lean angles like you see in sumo racing, but don't handle higher speeds as well. I don't think they'd wobble or anything, but they're just two very specific kinds of tires made for two different sorts of riding.

cg_ops
Any other tires I should consider over the Rosso 3's if I'm doing about 500 miles/month on the street and 1-3 regular track days a month? Q3? PP? S21? Etc

John K.
Pilot Power is the big competitor, though I prefer the Pirelli's handling (a bit snappier). The Q3 would be feasible, that one is particularly stable while leaned over, but just like the Conti is made for sumos, the Q3 is made for sport bikes. S21 is popular, but I don't have much experience with 'em.

If it were you on a 690SMC/701 and you were going with one for yourself, which would you use.... assuming track performance is the more important factor than longevity

John K.
Probably the Rosso 3 at first. But I really like Conti as a brand too, I'd probably want try both (eventually) and see which one I preferred.

After they discontinued the Distanzia I didn’t think Avon made SM tires anymore, got a link?

And are you referring to the most recent generation of Conti and Rosso or older versions?

I haven't run the conti's but I did use a Rosso3 to win a supermoto race last year on my DRZ... afterwhich I did a trackday at Thunderhill and a bunch of street riding. The tire performed very good on the track (almost as good as the Pirelli sc race tires I usually run and worked great on the street...with better tread life.

Thanks, great feedback. How is warm up time on the Rosso 3? Do you run warmers?

I ran warmers on the race weekend but not for thunderhill trackday. They stick better than my race tires when cold and I have total confidence after one lap of increasing corner speed. I was doing 2:12 lap times...
and my bike is really slow on the straights!

Looks like everyone is finally sold out of Avons.
Except the rain one.
The problem I had with the Conti SM was it was sticky fun until half way
Worn. it was harder and and traction was gone ..no feed back.
Felt fine then. Slam!! Also it was a Nail Magnet...

I believe the AV53/AV54 Avon TrailRider is the replacement for the Distanzia (and like the Distanzia, it's available in both DS versions and SM versions, with the SM versions significantly softer).

I agree with this. I run the Conti SMs right now and they were alright early on...I have about 2600 miles on them and they're pretty sketchy in corners at times.

I'll be replacing them next week.

i'm running d 3's on my rc390 right now-pretty good tire for the road-lot of grip in the cold.feel better than the alpha 13's that were on before.quick turn in,stable, carcass feels a little stiff with pretty good feedback.don't know about mileage yet,but looks like they will wear better than s20's or dr2's.usually run supercorsas on the track, but i'm gonna try dr3 rear and supercorsa front next trackday.you might consider power rs-using on a r3 right now.comparable tire, more stick, not as good in wet and cold conditions.

Slightly O/T... what are the recommended street and track pressures for the Conti SM? Currently on a KTM 500EXC-F

Street I like 28 f/r and track I like 22 f/r. Yah have to read the tire though because every track is different and your riding style/suspension setup will be different than me. Some cart tracks I'll go as low as 15, and faster big tracks like Thunderhill I'll run 28. There is no solid answer just a place to start, and read the tire wear.

Just mounted the Conti’s before a track day at Adams in SoCal. They felt great for street tires. I was able to keep up with / pass dudes on slicks without ever feeling sketchy. We’ll see how they wear though. Sounds like they suck after a little while.

I remember getting 1200mi to wearbars on the Conti SM tires in 08 or 09 on my 625SMC, all street, plenty of wheelies but no burnouts.

Not sure if they're the same tire though, and track != street.
