Carizo Plain sights

Hey everyone, been playing with mapping and routing stuff over the break and am thinking about a short trip down to Carizo if I can get it together. Wanna try out my camping set up and would prefer to camp alone in the hills as opposed to in a camp ground.

Read a few of the past posts about this and got a small idea but am looking for suggestions for roads, ridges, etc to explore and camp on. Probably a 3 day weekend from the Bay; thinking 25 down to Coalinga rd to get South, likely just slab it back; KTM 1090.

Any suggestions?

I Don't Do GPS
There are almost unlimited roads and ridges to camp in to the west of the main road. Pick one and go, or explore them all! Do be cautious if the ground is wet. Stay out of the lowlands if that happens!

Oh, and post lots of photos, please!

OK, I can definitely deal with that type of thing. Will play with some routing then find out what I actually do...
Thanks for the tip CarizoChick : )

I was soon on Elkhorn Road, making the left onto Hurricane Road
and riding up through the fog and off the Carrizo Plain ...

hard to go wrong down at the Carrizo Plain ... usually camp up on Hurricane Ridge on the east side, north of Hurricane Ridge Road, myself, but the west side of fun, too.

can be pretty cold up high on either side this time of year, depending (maybe some of the coldest winter camping I’ve ever done, just luck of the draw, maybe), so I’m usually careful to be prepared, with a couple of 30 deg down sleeping bags ... :laughing

but such awesome views, one of my favorite places ... have a wonderful ride! :ride

I went and explored the area that John likes(north from Hurricane road), last summer. I give it 2 thumbs up.
Santa Ana & Browns Valley road are fun diversions around Hollister. Parkfield Grade is way fun. Chalome & Bitterwater roads are fun 2 laners after that.

Thanks for all the great suggestions everyone. I'll get into plotting some type of route to go down and explore. Now if this damn Covid thing would go away I might actually be able to go.....we'll see.
