Building a 2001 GSXR750 stunt bike

Welcome to my build thread. I hope to update this along the way as I build a parking lot king out of my recently bought 2001 GSXR750. I always have enjoyed watching peoples builds so I though I would do one of my own.

Currently I have only a small idea of what I will be turning this bike into so I am up for recommendations about it. My first steps are to get it registered, hopefully, and get it crash safe.

I am planning on getting a Impaktech engine cage and hopefully a matching subcage to make sure that I don't brake the bike before I enjoy it. I have heard very good things about Impaktech so I am going to try it out. Most of the parts on the bike will be getting replaced over time, but there are currently some much needed replacements before I start riding it, so I will hit those up first.

Here she is right before I unloaded her. I think it actually has an SRAD headlight on it. I am still not sure why it does, but I verified that the frame is correct.

When you start slowing your wheelies down and getting more technical you are going to want a different bike. The gsxr 750 is built more for highway stunts.

First thing stunt bikers do Loose license plate
2. cut the pipe down so it does not scrape and make lots of noise. Says look at me I want attention.
3. Rear sprocket the size of a large pizza plate.
4. t-shirt Have to think about safety

Oh and flash stickers or paint

looking forward to the build.

Well it has been a while. Shortly after buying this bike my other one was stolen so my time was spend dealing with insurance and getting this bike legal, it a salvage with no title. Luckily, since it was such a low cost bike, they pushed it through the red take of getting a title rather easily from what I was expecting.

Although not very exciting, I put on a new front wiring harness and new gauge cluster. I also noticed that the exhaust is not stock. I need to find out what it actually is, although my money is on a 05-06 GSXR1000 since those bolt right up and it has the same joints as the one I have.

I bought a front and rear sprocket. (15t front/ 48t rear) I am waiting to put that on at the moment. I want to get the bike a bit further along before I get the new chain for it.

I did with while waiting for my cages to arrive from Impaktech, which added an extra 2 weeks to the shipping. However, the cage looks great and feels sturdy as hell. I got that bolted on without too much problems.

Since I am trying to make the bike legal, I have to pass a brake and light inspection which required my headlight, turn signals, and taillight to all be DOT certified. So I bolted/zip tied on a bunch of lights that are all from different stock bikes and passed with flying colors.

The headlight came with the bike but is from I SRAD GSXR, I believe. Front blinkers are from a parts bin at the salvage motorcycle shop. I have no idea what they are from. And the taillight, rear blinkers and mud guard/license plate bracket are from my 2010 CBR600rr which I am glad I kept. The bike came with a blacked out taillight and I was worried that would not pass, so now it has an ugly whale tail zip tied on.

I still can't believe this shit passed without any issues. Although he skipped a lot of other tests that he was suppose to do. The bike is now on a temp tag till the end of the year. I will say, not having a license plate is rather freeing since there is no way a cop can track me down easily.

I did a few other things to the bike as well, but I have not taken any pictures, so more to come soon. I took the photos before putting the new grips on as you can see.

Things to come:
Levers
Grips
Front and rear sprockets
Chain
Air filter and removing the air bypass
Running the wires under the tank
Replacing all the missing hardware
3D printing some parts

Impatck is awesome! i had the same cage on my F4i and crashed a few times and never a scratch on the bike.. then i rode that bike from San francisco to Pakistan, crashed in Romania (200+kmph) and the entire bike was in pieces but not a scratch or bend to the frame or motor. Impatek did its job.

Well it has been way too long since I updated this post. When I first got the bike I was in between jobs so had some time. Shortly after I started work on it, I had my other bike stolen, got a new bike, got a new job, and did a lot of traveling. The worst part is not having a garage that I can just work on it in.

Well enough of my excuses...

Since last time I posted, I have installed new gold clutch and brake lever and gold and black grips. I was going to go with a gold and black theme, but a short while later, I decided to change that up and go with purple and white. This is really not a big deal that is the reason for the random gold stuff.

I now have MX handle bars mounted to the stock triple. I ordered a new stock upper triple because I don't like the position of the holes I drilled. I am going to also reinforce the next one with JB Weld and a steel plate to strengthen it up. I'm going to relocate the ignition to somewhere else so I can move the holes further forward and a little wider. Right now the bars are a bit to high because the bolts where hitting so I had to add spacers. Moving the bolts will remove the need for them.

I added an Impaktech easy pull clutch and routed the clutch cable under the gas tank to clean it up and have nothing hanging off. Its okay so far. I need to get the positioning a bit better and maybe add stop of some sort. The first inch of pull is easy to do and disengages the clutch, but pulling it further or holding it there is not so easy. So I'm going to add a way to stop if from being pulled so far past clutch release.

With the added hight of the MX bars, I needed new front brake lines. I went with a set of Core steel braided purple and white lines. There are really nice so far and a good price. The color is a little dull, but its not that important.

I have the Driven grips which are perfect. The have no movement and are not too sticky in my gloves. I will just have to change the end band color at some point.

I reupholster the seat with some good vinyl from amazon. It was not too hard and turned out really good. I think the seat was aftermarket and has a bunch of added cushion. I think I am going to cut some of it off at some point so i can actually use the seat to stand. And I bought a rear seat as well.

Lastly, I took the ugly temporary taillight fender off and put the actual taillight back on. Added some cheap blinkers I had lying around and zip tied my "plate" back on.

So next up is taking care of that ugly front end. I have some new lights to put on and I am 3D printing up the mounting brackets. I also have a 905 round bar coming.

I hope to post more often now but only time will tell. I have taken this out to an empty lot a only once a month ago, and just fucked around with it a bit. I really need someone else to go with though since stunting solo is a scary concept.

Is that the gearing you were looking for? Still seems a little tall, no?

That exhaust looks like an old-school Akra.

I have an old Akra just like that. Can you believe it's the quietest bike I've ever had? Love it.

I am not sure yet on the gearing. Since it is a 750 and not a 600 I felt that dropping the front 2 and raising the rear 6 might be a good start. I have never geared a bike before and I picked the sprockets up cheap on here. I am still rocking the stock gearing and I have not had the time to really take the bike out. I am either planning to change to the new setup this weekend or take it out and beat on it. The tires are starting to get low so I might just wait till they need to be changed.

The exhaust is super quite. I am actually happy about this since it doesn't draw as much attention. I am still unsure of the exact make of it. I'll need to check for markings at some point.

stunting is one thing i loved the most when i was back in the Bay. with friends in a parking lot, doing it safely was so much fun. Although i sucked at it, the learning process is exhilarating. take time out and go practice, we want some wheelie pictures now!! : )

I plan to try and do something soon, but between being out of town and it raining, I have not been out enough. I'm itching to get that front wheel off the ground more than a foot.

Now stunting the twisties
Looks like fun bike for the street, I've never stunted one I am curious on how it came out.

Edit: I forgot I've stunted a gsxr1000, that 750 should be fine for awhile i think. Was still doing slow stunts with stock clip ons and less gearing.
