Barf Baja 2020 is officially happening. Dates for the trip are Friday 1/24 through Sunday 2/2 (though most folks head down a day early on Thursday 1/23.) . Ie folks leave Bay Area 1/23-24 and return to Bay Area 2/2.
The trip will be a northern "loop" this year staging/riding from the border with a layover of a 2-3 days in Bahia de Los Angeles (Bola) at the southern end of the loop. As usual, the main trip will be planned for plated street legal 650 thumpers and under for experienced offroad riders with fresh mechanically sound motorcycles. Exact staging, routes, destinations, and accommodations details are TBD at this time.
With that said, this format will allow folks on ADV bikes, vintage bikes, street bikes, or even members driving a truck to meet up at minimum a few days during the layover in Bola to enjoy the pool, food, drinks and bench racing. More of a rally destination format per se. This will also allow folks that want to make their own itinerary the option to join us at anyone one of the destinations the main dirt bike group goes.
When the final details are available, we will share our itinerary and accommodations info with folks not riding with the main dirt group. Those folks will need organize their own appropriate group of riders, routes, and logistics to meet up with the dirt riders. arty
First, a few very important points to consider before inquiring about joining the ride.
This isn't a guided tour. Its a group of BARF members on their vacation going to Baja that happens to be open to and actually encourages new folks to join them. BARF, Budman, any of the core ride planners, or participants do not make any claim or promises about riders safety or enjoyment. You are simply joining a number of Barf forum members on their vacation. You are responsible for your own safety and enjoyment. We aren't there to guide or take care of you or your bike, its our VACATION. If you don't understand, this isn't a trip for you.
Riding in Baja is DANGEROUS. Riding unsupported in Baja as we do in this format is VERY DANGEROUS. You can be injured, permanently disabled, and even killed. Yes, you can DIE riding in Baja. There are no emergency services to come rescue you in many parts of Baja where we ride. No Spot/Inreach/Helicopter insurance etc etc is going to change that. We don't ride with support vehicles available to extricate you. You may very well have to ride out injured for help (no joke, I am not F'ing kidding here). Again, you can get injured, potentially permanently, or even die. If you are unwilling to accept those risks and ride appropriately, please don't join us on our vacation. This isn't a trip for you.
This isn't a Rip to the Tip kind of ride. If you are looking for something like that, there are of course other options for you. Riding unsupported in the manner we do means riding well below your limits. Some say 50% of your ability, others suggest like you are riding alone solo through the desert. Its a zero mistake environment. Injury and riding beyond your abilities are not only a danger to you in this format, its a danger for all the participants. If you are unwilling to accept this and show the maturity to ride in such a fashion, this isn't a trip for you.
We all contribute to this ride. From planning to resources, everyone will be asked and must be willing to contribute without questions. This may mean having a relative stranger riding down in your truck to Baja, someone borrowing a trailer, giving up a day or two of your riding/vacation to help another rider. Whatever you have, you must be willing to share without question. If this seems unreasonable, this isn't a trip for you.
This a group trip first and foremost. We all get along and everyone is accepted. NO F"ing drama. Take care of your shit. Be and adult. Its an epic bucket list type of environment/trip for any dirt or adventure rider, we ALL share in this experience. Lifetime friends have often come out of these trips. It has always been a wide range of rider skills and backgrounds. Veteran and Baja newbies should expect to ride together. If you and a friend are considering coming down and riding on your own each day without interacting or participating with the group, this isn't a trip for you.
Its VERY bad karma to negatively impact others on their vacation. So if you aren't in good enough shape to ride 200+ miles a day offroad, don't have the skill to do it SAFEly, don't have a bike capable and reliable enough to make it, or possess the mechanical ability to repair your own bike on the trail.... well.... this probably isn't a trip for you.
So how do you join the group on their vacation this coming winter?
1) We have to meet you in person
2) We have to ride with you on the bike you will be taking to Baja
3) You should be able to ride 200 + miles in a day offroad
4) You own a street legal thumper
5) Your bike must be maintained and sorted to go 1000 miles offroad
6) You must demonstrate you are willing and able to contribute to the group
7) Attend our monthly planning meetings announced here is this subforum
8) Be active on Barf and share your trip experiences here after
Anyone that makes the commitment, demonstrates the ability, owns a bike that is both properly maintained and sorted, has the right attitude, and likes meeting new friends will be welcomed. :teeth
No need to PM me. Just post up here in this thread. Myself or another trip veteran will answer your questions.
