2021 Investment Thread

Taken from 2020 and updated in bold/italics for 2021:

Hey guys, let's open this thread to your ideas, worries, recommendations and pans. Please refrain from doomsday apocalyptic warnings such as: "It's all going to collapse and the Dow will hit 400." If you think that's what is going to happen, a phrase such as: "I see nothing good coming for years, just collapse" will work fine. If you believe that it's going to collapse, you are probably not investing.

AFM199's perennial favorite ADX remains so. Great ETF for old guys with a nice yearly end of year dividend, and the oldest fund traded in the US.

AFM199 is certainly enjoying this nice little bump upward, but he doesn't think it predicts any such continuing enthusiasm. The CV hasn't done anything yet except further weaken the dollar and the effect will linger for decades.

Should we start off 2021 with lists of current holdings? I mean don't have to list quantities or anything just tickers and maybe current prices? Might give a better picture than just randomly remembering an ETF when someone asks or whatever. Could make a handy reference point for people inquiring what to buy.

Edit :
No code has to be inserted here.

Also price = current price, not what I bought in at or how much quantity. I have a variety of small quantities I'm buying / selling / playing options on with several other tickers too but they're relatively inconsequential. Gains are dumped into the above.

Do whatever you want. I just copied the silent generation's guidelines. :laughing

FWIW, I am long in PCG because why not? :laughing

I see little to change from my 2020 prognosis except: "When the QE dies, so will the market, but don't bet against the FED, they have more money than anyone else." I truly believe that the market is priced too high and that sooner or later inflation and lessened QE is going to hit hard. But a certain somebody just said that there was another couple trillion ready to be freely disbursed, so that day obviously isn't tomorrow or next week, maybe.

Top holdings:

BKN
VOO
VTV
SCHD
ADX
NHS
PCN
GRX
PCK
BRK/B
SPY
PFN
SPIP

My holdings are not recommendations, some of these are long term, some short term.

I got into the game late but most of my holdings are stocks that were seriously depressed during the early part of the year and I thought were good buys that would bounce back once the 'Rona died down and life got back to normal.

UAL
DAL
MOS
CCL
GAP
F
APHA

I have others but at work and can't check right now.

I am going to start buying into some stocks that have dividends and then roll those back in to buy more as a kind of self-feeding cycle.

First page. Wondering how the next month will play out.

With everything doing so well I wonder if it's a bad time to buy?

I have two traditional IRAs, one managed by a personal friend who happens to be a stockbroker, and the other managed by me out of personal interest.

In the latter I hold a set of gold mining stocks (AEM, GOLD, EGO, NEM) and also CPB, FCOM, F, EWA, DGX and SCHP.

FCOM and DGX have been my biggest winners to date. CPB has performed poorly but I like its prospects and plan to hang onto it long term. F is a brand new acquisition.

Outside of the IRAs I gave up on the shitty savings account returns at Ally, and moved that cash to AGG, SCHP and VOO in an account at Ally Invest. So far a good move.

you guys have extra money to invest???!!!

It's extra money if you view it as extra money. If you view it as a savings mechanism for purposes of retirement or other long term goals, it takes on a whole new meaning. For me, it's money I never see every month because I treat it as a standard expense. Yes, my present quality of life is reduced but it's with the goal that I will benefit later on in life.

Interesting portfolio! Congrats on the VGT. Though I pulled out of it. Had a good ride.

Gonna have to buy some tax software this year, I don't think that I will try to do my taxes by hand anymore.

I’m tech heavy because last year was really the first year I started managing my own stuff rather than just an allocation to my 401k/Roth every month. Realized I was leaving a lot on the table. Measly gains that were barely keeping up with inflation. So for now it’s either tech or index funds for the most part.

I did buy a few shares each of some of the dividend stocks I listed in last years thread and will increase my holdings there I think until I hit about 100 shares each (enough to start selling options for a bit extra off them).

I bought more PLTR today and plan on reducing my overall exposure to individual stocks once I pull out of TSLA. I bought in at $230-ish so it’s been fun and I’m kicking myself for not dumping a lot more into it when I could have but man it was so volatile I was worried about risking my cash - been saving for a down payment for a house.

If you have a lot of trades, "Tradelog" is essential. If not, Turbotax will do it!
