Are there "bad" motorcycles sold in the US?

Cars were bad in the '80s in general, but I thought Chevy Chevette was the wrost of the worst. I read Yugos were crap but never drove one. With my limited experience, I can't think of a motorcycle that would not be fun to own and ride. Are/were there bikes sold in the US that are just bad? I'm...

Sit high resulting in less lean?

Look at the photos in the beginning of this thread and the notes right below each photo: http://www.bestbeginnermotorcycles.com/forum/forum/3206/body-position-corners#comment-21994 Picture 4 (rider crouched right down) -> resulting in more bike lean than picture 5, so slower according to the...

    Road hazards at night

Last night I had to swerve to avoid a junior-sized mattress lying squarely in my lane on Almaden Expressway. I saw it in my headlight with 2-3 seconds of warning and dodged it fairly easily, but my heart rate still went up slightly. Seems like hitting a mattress would guarantee a crash, or is it...

Windy day on a naked bike

This morning I rode my SV650 from San Jose toward Milpitas on 680 at about 80mph and thought the headwind was brutal. I used so much upper body strength to battle the wind it was a) fatiguing, b) totally distracted me from focusing on riding. In the afternoon I rode from San Jose to Cupertino on...

Riding with a low-key but much better rider

Went out with a new riding partner this weekend in the Santa Cruz mountains. I knew the route better so I was leading earlier on and he just followed, never commented on the pace or anything. Late in the ride I suggested we swap lead, only then did I discover how much better a rider he was. When...

Gnarliest public road for street motorcycle?

Which road (east bay, south bay, Santa Cruz, peninsula) is the gnarliest (narrow, steep, twisted and broken) public road we can ride on in terms of technical difficulty? As in, if you can ride this road, then you can ride any road. Also, how do you rank Sierra/Felter (connct to Calaveras)...

    Backpack bad in a crash?

I wear a backpack while commuting to work; some times it’s stuffed pretty full. I’m beginning to think wearing a backpack may be a bad idea in a crash. It seems like it would prevent you from sliding flat on your back and cause more of a bumpy and violent roll, and maybe screw up the back...

Lending your bike to a friend (who can't ride) resulting in a crash?

I was just browsing Craigslist and saw another listing with the "some damage because I let my friend ride it and he dropped it." Question for those of you who have let a friend ride your bike (especially a nice, new one) and crashed it. 1. Why would you lend your bike to a friend if you’re not...

    pump out overfilled oil

Rather than removing the cowling to get to the drain plug and making a mess draining the excess oil out, I used a pump from a lotion bottle to pump out the excess oil from the filler hole. I used 20 oz paper cups to hold the oil so I could tell how much oil I pumped out. 3 cups later (60 oz!)...

How far down to look through the turn?

Let me use a freeway clover-leaf ramp as an example. Usually there is an elevation change - the ramp either inclines up or down, so you can see the whole 270 degrees turn if you turned your head like an owl. The question is, how far should I turn my head to look through the turn? With guard...

Putting a foot down during an unexpected slide on pavement - good or bad?

Last week during lunch I rode my GS500 north (San Jose toward Sunol) on Calaveras and then turned around and headed back south. During a right hand turn (south bound, still on Alameda County side I think, blind corner, gentle uphill) I kept the speed low (maybe 20 mph), mild lean, and mild...

Steering effort - why so heavy?

I’ve been riding a ’01 GS500 since January and just got a ’03 YZF600R last weekend. Today I did a back-to-back ride on the two bikes – Almaden Exwy-McKean-Uvas-Watsonville-Monterey Rd-back to San Jose. The YZF has a pretty heavy steering (to me). It feels like it takes several pounds of strong...

How do you get over a crash?

I crashed on Jamison Creek Road during a group ride on 5/17. Unfamiliar road, took a left-hand sweeper too fast, overloaded the brain and failed to look thru the turn, which resulted in a low-side at about 30-40 mph. Damages to me – rash on both elbows, left butt cheek and outside of left calf...

Riding hwy 17 - challenges, risks and reward?

I have not ridden hwy 17 and wanted to see what others say about it, but I was surprised that a search on “hwy 17” turned up nothing. I can handle hwy 17 fine in a car (often trail braking deep into a downhill turn due to entry speed being too high). To me the section from the summit down to...

Ride thru gravel/sand/dirt on pavement while leaning possible?

I rode Mt. Hamilton-SanAntonio-Mines today. If I hadn't read this thread about gravel on Mines Road, I probably would have low sided too. That's a spectacular but very lonely road. The pavement is in good condition, well marked, nice sweepers, would have been motorcycling heaven if taken at...

    3/29/09 5PM Skyline crash - Corvette vs. Harley ?

This happened on Skyline Blvd between Highway 9 and Page Mill on Sunday, 3/29/09, around 5PM. Skyline was closed in both directions for about 1.5 hrs. Anyone has more info on this crash? Looks like a Corvette vs. a Harley. You can see the Harley riding in front of the Corvette on the tow truck.
