Unholy oil color, funky sight "glass"

First time using this oil today. When it came out my heart skipped a beat - am I pouring anti-freeze into the engine? Stopped and stared at the bottle for a good 10 seconds to make sure it IS engine oil. Radioactive-green is one my favorite colors, but this seems gimmicky. You've seen oil...

How often do you get a flat?

I’ve never had a flat In 6.5 years, 80k mi, 11 bikes. The probability of getting a flat seems too low to bother with carrying a flat repair kit… (I’ve been driving since the early 80’s. Had a couple of blowouts, but don’t recall needing any flat repair on the road.)

Suspension and minor adjustments - wow!

I was very disappointed by the new-to-me, low mileage '06 Speed Triple because: Poor suspension - loose in general and harsh on sharp bumps. Set up at Catalyst Reaction improved it, yet fundamentally still loose-harsh. Front brake - lever felt gritty. Throttle/engine - low-speed off-on...

    Which Japanese bikes have soul?

Most Japanese bikes are so sterile next to European and American bikes. Tried as I may I can't get excited about the VFR new and old. GSXRs and Bandits look so Plain-Jane. Seems to me Japanese's focus on quantity (lower price, mass market) is the main reason. Not sure how much is driven by the...

Anybody uses this tie down clamp? How do you like them? http://www.tiedownclamp.com

    The amazingly rusty chain

Have you seen a worse looking chain on a running bike? If so post it here.

The last few hundred miles out of a set of tires

Do you promptly replace tires as they get to (or near) the wear bars, or try to squeeze the last few hundred miles past the wear bars? I had 6.5k mi on a set of BT-023 on my Multistrada. The rear reached the wear bar since 6k mi, but probably could go to 7k mi; the front looked like it could...

A great CL ad (and a great price) for a Tiger 800

I just love this guy's ad! (Wonder if he would take $8k.) :laughing

Pavement rippled on front of 9 downhill into Saratoga?

I had not been on the front side of 9 for a while - I normally take Bear Creek or Black Rd to get up/down to/from Skyline. Yesterday I rode my ZX-10R up 9 from Saratoga, right on Skyline to Half Moon Bay then back up on different roads. The bike felt great until I started descending on 9 from 4...

    Technique for riding down stairs

I rode down some stairs on my DRZ once – maybe 8 steps, 4 ft overall. First gear, no clutch, throttle off. The bike bounced hard and the engine stalled by the time I reached the bottom. What’s the right thing to do with gear selection (first, second, etc.), clutch, front brake, rear brake and...

Natural pace - effected by the bike?

I think everyone has a natural pace when we ride. This pace increases with experience and skills, but at a given time, how much does the bike affect one's natural pace? When you switch to a very different type of bike, how much does your pace change? I've been wondering - I'm the constant, the...

Brain freeze decision on a bike that you can't explain

Have you done something stupid on a bike but can't explain why? Last week I rode the new to me 690SM to work for the first time. Split to the front, when the light turned green I took off hard. 10 seconds later I saw a BMW R1200? hard on my tail, just a couple of bike-length back. I was like...

Your bike's age and mileage at time of purchase

What was your bike's age and mileage when you bought it? I'll start: - bike age, bike mileage, (optional: bike yr/model, # of owners before you, duration of your ownership, mileage when you sold it.) - 8 years old, 8.4k mi, '01 GS500, 2 owners (before me), 1 yr 8 mo (duration of my...

Why don’t sport/race bikes have better high speed wind protection?

Normally, air-resistance on the bike isn’t bad at 90-100 mph, but last Sat going north on I5/580 from Patterson toward Livermore on my ZX-10R, going 90-100mph with a stiff headwind was brutal. It was hard to hang on (without full tuck), and the wind gave my neck muscles a real work out. I was...

    Fast cruiser riders

Do you know them, or have seen them? I was very surprised by a guy riding a Shadow 1100 during a SBR group ride a month ago. Going up Page Mill at a brisk pace he never slowed anyone down. Even on Highland Way/Eureka Canyon (very twisty, broken, and dirty pavement, about as bad/good as it gets...

Steering technique: push forward + pull back = grab and throw SIDEWAYS

I’ve been focusing on being light on the controls. For turning, lightly push on the inside grip, often pull on the outside grip, aided by the right body position. On Mon morning I re-read Proficient Motorcycling, and the part on synchronizing the hands for the turn got my attention. Rather...

    PR2 @ 10101 mi -> Angel GT @ 1 mi

Very happy with PR2's mileage (10101 mi) and performance but time to try something different. Early impression of the Angel GT (about 45 mi commute miles) - more compliant, less stiff, than the PR2. Steering feels a bit rubber-coated, compared to the sharper, more direct, feel of PR2. Need...

Small bike sucks at freeway commute

This morning I was droning at 70mph in the #2 lane on the DRZ, not wanting to stress the engine too much, and regretting taking the DRZ instead of the 10R for the commute. In the left mirror I saw a bike in the #1 lane gradually gaining on me. I sighed; this wouldn’t have happened if I was on...

What you wish for with your bikes

DRZsm – The usual: - A sixth gear - Another 50cc in displacement for a bit more power. (FI would be cool but the carb works just fine.) ZX-10R – - A mechanical R1-style round-dial tach. The LCD tach is completely worthless! - That I have a stronger back so don’t have to stop and stretch every...

    BT-023, dual-compound rear boundary lines

This BT-023 rear has 2.1k mi on my Multistrada, ran at 38 psi. You can clearly see the center vs. sides boundary lines. Have you seen this on other dual-compound rear tires? I did NOT see the boundary lines like this on the PR2, Angel ST or Roadsmart I had.
