Heading out on a 3 dayer with my riding buddy. Not even sure where we are headed except it has Trinity Lake and the Rouge River attached. He puts together some great routes and I love being the puppy in tow: follow and watch the countryside.

Damn, what a great area TWT picked for the rally. Didn't really know where we were headed to but ended up in Oregon, and made a loop around the Marble Mountain Wilderness. Drop dead gorgeous roads and country. The surprising part was California was more beautiful than Oregon...

Left at 7:15am. and road over 300 miles the first day (Friday) a bit much for me but many of the campgrounds that were listed on the map were closed or were mis-marked as river access. Went thru Redding, past Lewiston Lake, Trinity Center and followed the Trinity River Hwy 3 up to Etna. This follows the river until it becomes a dribble at the summit - awesome!

Stopped for lunch at the Etna Brewery, had a beautiful stout to go with my burger. What an interesting small town! I'll be staying downtown at the hotel sometime in the future.

Ended up going thru Happy Camp, up into Oregon to Cave Junction. We headed over to the Coast and ended up not-so-stealth camping at an overlook (bearcamp) on the way to Gold Beach.

Salmon River Road, shit the bed. Rock wall on the right side and drop off to the river on the left. Nothing else can compare to this road. Two full sized trucks would have issues passing each other on this "road". Badass and sooo beautiful. Found a campsite before Forks of the Salmon and set up camp. Unfortunately, everything is a bit of a hike to the river, but sure made it feel good to finally take a dip. Neighbors horses strolled into camp for a visit.

Today, headed out by 8am and went thru Cecilville, and came out of 93 at Callhan. Another epic road. Loved this section! Then headed back to the Trinity and backtracked home. Shitty part was getting to Redding when it was 105. Head felt like a poached egg by the time we got home....Probably 800 miles in all.

I've looked at this road for awhile now.

Now that I've got the KLR, it's time.

... Mendo camping 8/2 & 8/3 ...

[... ride over, SPOT link removed ... :nchantr]

... I'm off tomorrow to do a Mendo Grand Tour and
hang out with the BARF Weaverville crew over the weekend ...

... the plan :rolleyes
is to leave tomorrow after
work (I'm all oil-changed, chain adjusted and loaded)
and to camp Tuesday night at
High Glade watchtower, above Clear Lake:

Here's a pin on Google maps you can zoom in and out on for High Glade ...

... oobus is threatening to meet me on 8/2 on Anthony Peak
with maybe some of his ADV buddies ...

https://www.google.com/maps/place/Anthony+Peak/@39.8449853,-122.9651028,15z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x80821b35c717c4c1:0xb4fba0a74ac34a7!8m2!3d39.8462647!4d-122.9644507?hl=en
... and the same google pin for Anthony Peak ...

... both are pretty basic fire roads up to a watchtower view ...
I carry lots of water with me because there usually isn't
any water on the top of a mountain ...

... our plans become less clear after Wednesday,
and you need to follow the instructions in the
BARF 2018 Weaverville thread to join that crew, but everyone
is welcome there, too ... I don't think it's too late
to do Weaverville next weekend ... :dunno

... you can use the "findme" link at the top
of this thread to see if I get out of South of Market
at 1:30pm as planned, and if I'm making to to High Glade ... :ride

... anyway, we'll see ... I talk a lot ... :blah:laughing

... anyone reading this is welcome to
meet us up there ... :party

see you around
the campfire,

Looks like it's working today...

I'm still thinking about Weaverville, but probably can't do it on the XR.. I am thinking about just loading up the XR this weekend though and camping somewhere...

I'll be camping somewhere Sunday night, 8/6, hopefully
Sheetiron Mountain ... Sunday night may
be tough for those of us that work, ha ... :party

... still thinking about rebuilding the top-end on your KLR?

... otherwise kick-only XR400s are cool, as are new bikes, double-ha ... :ride

Mendo Grand Tour to Weaverville ...

... fifty-one BARFers made it to Two Wheel Tramp's
second Weaverville Rally ... it was awesome, and gave
me an opportunity to ride Mendo fire roads there
and back again ...

flatfront.jpg

... got to ride with oobus, who helped me change my flat front tire ...
mysterious pin-hole at Hwy 36 and Horse Ridge ...

rtcstbias.jpg

... Right Coast Bias came along and saved the day with the
correct sized wrench for my front axle nut and a portable electric air pump
which I'm going to buy one for myself today ...

flatrear.jpg

... my flat rear tire at the gas station in Upper Lake on Sunday,
caused un-mysteriously by a screw ... it was 100 degrees, ouch ...

... the seasonal "Road Closed" road to my planned first night campsite,
High Glade ...

... OaklandF4i drove up to visit me on Tuesday night at my alternate
campsite, Dry Oak Camp, just up the road from High Glade ... he brought
me a hand-pump, which I'd neglected to pack ...

apcamp.jpg

... my campsite on Anthony Peak on Wednesday night ...

... turns out oobus is smarter than me ... due to the heat he suggested
we spend Thursday night at his beautiful home nestled in a 100-year-old olive orchard with his lovely wife and
pool ... ha.

horserdgwt.jpg

... the next day we found the second watchtower on Horse Ridge, which I've
been looking for for years ...

... we found an epic swimming hole after we were denied by a locked
gate from proceeding to Castle Crags per m0t0_ryder's plan ...

... camping on Mt. Hull on Sunday ...

... and sunrise from Mt Hull ...

“The night sky lies so sprent
with stars
that there is
scarcely space of black at all
and they fall
all night in bitter arcs
and it is so
that their numbers are no less.”

-- Blood Meridian

... the 2017 BARF Weaverville Rally was awesome, all credit to Two Wheel Tramp and all the
BARFers who made the scene ...

I've been on several BARF rallies
now, and so far they have all made a
great platform for organizing an
adventure ride to get to them ...

Great pics and report! If I didnt have other plans/obligations would have loved to have joined you for the rest of the ride. Found out more info on the "seasonal" road closure to the look out as it didnt make any sense to me. Road is closed due to damage, not the season. Sign is right that its closed, just not seasonal. Must have run out of plain old road closed signs.

See you tomorrow night!

Very nice ride report John!
You made it to some cool places.
I like your pic's and again... sorry you had to experience dual flats. Before even making it to "The Weave". Hope you don't have to use those patches I gave ya too soon.

Also... let me get you one of the 22mm axle nut/tire spoons. (I can get them at a pretty good price)
I'll try to make one of the Wednesday baja meets to get it to you.
I'd have given you mine if I was done riding for the weekend but wasn't sure if it would be needed or not.

Anyway, hope to make another ride with ya one day!

Interesting info about the road closure to High Glade ...
I was up that road in June and it looked like
it had been washed out and fixed ... maybe they
had a gully-washer and it washed out again ... :dunno

Hope to see you tonight, too, I have your pump, ha ... :laughing

... want to talk about seeing you at Penny Pines, too ... :thumbup
