After six weeks off I'm back in the gym. I've lost a little lean muscle and put on a few pounds of fat, probably about 15% BF right now and 198lbs. I'm planning on working mostly shoulders and lat-width; so lots of military press and wide-grip lat pulldowns.
Today starts twelve weeks of work, easing into it with a 20 minute row followed by 12 sets of military press, sets of 8 @100lbs. This evening I'll do a 5 mile run with 1800 ft. of elevation. Diet will consist of nuts, chicken, oats, whey protein, kale, spinach, and egg whites.
Speaking of breaks...
I actually had hernia surgery the Monday after Thanksgiving. I didn't do shit for about a month before that because it hurt, and then didn't really do shit after cause mentally I didn't feel like I could run/lift/play sports/whatever
Probably for 6 weeks now I've been going out with a couple friends and kicking around a soccer ball a bit, running a bit, but very low intensity.
3 weeks ago I got back in the garage and did a "through the motions" workout. Basically just barbell only. Definitely not easy to get back to a routine, or easy to get the diet back on track.
Pretty much put back the 20lbs that I had lost... sooo I get to restart all my progress. again
Still not super convinced I'm 100% and will continue to do super light weight so I don't tear my shit again -- the hernia wasn't an actual hernia, insides weren't pushing out, but there were tears and it's the same surgery anyway -- BUT something is better than nothing, and I'm gonna get way more strict on the diet again.
My scale can fuck off though.
I lost 4lbs, but feeling flat. I have knee pain.
Got to coach a kid (19yrs old) in fight IQ and tactical aspects of boxing. The kid punches really fcking hard, and I showed him the nuance of where power is derived from and how to harness it when punches feel “pushed”. We reviewed the Ryan Garcia / Luke Campbell fight as a lesson on tactical approaches, and I talked about how punching a heavy bag mostly can actually set you back. We were talking about this: if cardio and exercise is your goal, this may not be the place to train. The striking part of our gym is getting more and more serious, and I couldn’t be more stoked.
It was cool and built my confidence as a coach and corner man. I can’t wait until local matches start up again, because I know we have champions in that gym just waiting to get going.
BTW, I have a YouTube channel for my students but y’all are welcome to check it out. It’s everything for white belt level striking in my school:

Its interesting that you say that. When I first started muay thai training, the gym I went to was small and a little more hardcore. There were no bags so we were either hitting mits or sparring ( intensity depended on who I was sparring ). I took a break from that and later on just focused on boxing for fitness ( 90% of the time on heavy bag.) And let me tell you, hitting a stationary target definitely fucks up your tempo when you go back to sparring.
Climbing gym reopened and as expected, I regressed back down to 5.9s. Technique is there but I dont quite have the stamina back yet. Restarted yoga and picked up skipping rope to round out the repertoire.

Shoulda gotten a hang board.Ha, ha same. Went yesterday, and was pumped out on 10a.
Had great plans to keep strength up, but gave up few weeks in. Basically to square one now. At least technique is there.
