I still have yet to move my lazy ass to find a youtube of Billie Eilish so I have no idea what's she's about musically.

But what cracked me up was some fake media controversy about her wearing a tank top and taking shit for it. I mean, this is the woman with the weird ass green hairdo and the tanktop is the problem?

We live in a world where whack job 15 year olds can have their 15 minutes of fame through criticizing some inane aspect of a star.

Why do you think this country is so thoroughly fucked? :laughing

I felt this way back when Trader Joe's was going to change all it's offensive labels (Trader Jose, Trader Giotto, etc etc etc). Who are these critics, what qualifications and why the inordinate power in the age of Woke-ism?

I think the term 'woke' is not really a valid term, it's more a political tool to malign others.

However, I think it's more about Power. I've met too many kids who like to have power over adults and others, they choose to be 'sensitive' to create a circumstance where they can exercise power over others. They should never be catered to, and yet the internet has given them far more power than they ever should have been granted.

By kids, you mean adults, right?

You mean adults who started off being offended by other adults wearing Halloween costumes on campus?

That kind of sensitivity control? Wasn't some Dean, or professor's job on the line, several years back?

I wonder what my boys are going to be listening to in a few years for me to go, "wow, too heavy." I bet it is going to be BRUTAL. :laughing

I'm not sure how much 'heavier' music will get. I mean, 'heavier' music than KMFDM, or Slayer, or Napalm Death, has existed for years - decades even. Just search 'noisecore' on youtube and you'll find some really interesting stuff with some increasingly narrowing listenability.

What I'm guessing is that there will be some bigger multicultural influences on heavy metal and industrial music. I was a latecomer to The Hu which is metal band based out of Mongolia who is fucking rad. Personally I'd love to hear more Indian influences on metal music, and I'm excited by what I've heard in crossovers of rap and industrial music.

Nickelback is one of the most commercially successful Canadian rock bands, having sold more than 50 million albums worldwide.[1] In 2009, Billboard ranked them the most successful rock group of that decade; their song "How You Remind Me" was listed as the best-selling rock song and the fourth best-selling song of the decade overall. They were listed number seven on the Billboard top artist of the decade, with four albums listed on the Billboard top albums of the decade.

You know that thing you like? Someone else hates it.

Actually, no.

I'm talking about various kids I've encountered over the years who got off on forcing others to do what they wanted through a variety of methods including being sensitive.

Those are the ones in my direct experience, but I've seen plenty of signs of the type out on the internet as well. People who choose to be offended because there is power in being offended.

Two of her more popular songs, 'Bad Guy' and ' You Should See Me In a Crown' use distorted, low bass for a significant part of their sound. It's catchy music made from odd sounds and there's a lot going on there despite being really minimal. I don't care for a lot of her music, but it's some of the most interesting pop music I've heard in a long time.

It's also noteworthy that she's 19 years old - AFAIK she does all of her own songwriting and she does the engineering with her brother. Not bad for someone that young. Whether she burns out or she'll have a long career is anyone's guess.

Maybe give "everything I wanted" a listen before you write her off. Its a great song but it's a little too sad for me.

Bad guy is an awesome song. Also "Everything I wanted" is a song based on how people treated her after she got famous. That kid is muy talented.

Love it Hooli.

My moment of Enlightenment was seeing an acquaintance get out of her Pontiac Aztek. I wasn't supposed to know anybody who liked that thing or something..:laughing:laughing:laughing

So a corollary is: there are things out there that you find incomprehensible to like but somebody does. And in the case of that car, enough that they made and sold more than a few.

I still hate the original mango Prius design, for that matter. (sorry BARFers with Prii). But that didn't stop a zillion people from getting them. So it must just be me.

And I have listened to several more Eilish songs and they all sound the same to me. Too much wah wah, fade, distortion, breathy vocals, angst and teen age pain. She may develop into another Edit Piaf, but right now she's fingernails on blackboard. And I totally support everyone who loves her.

It could be worse. It could be a little girly voice with a ukulele.

Or Buffy Saint Marie.

My sister loved her as a young teen, played her record repeatedly all day. Hated that voice with a passion.
